  • 50 Things To Make Life Better

It is time for college and university students to get back into the swing of things. Here are some things you should know that they don't teach in your learning institution.. This is a repost, but a good one.....

I told my beloved SaintVi I wanted to steal her idea of posting 50 things I have learned in my life. She gave me the idea readily and encouraged me to write this. I have finished eating some of her baking for breakfast so here I go.

I turn 50 on Saturday, it blows my mind. Allow me to share some of the things I've learned in my fifty years of LIVING.

    1. You are stronger and more resilliant than you think you are. I live in chronic pain, the result of a drunk driver. All day every day. Your problems are not that big when you compare. And if they are, you CAN handle them.

2.Never pass up an opportunity to tell a little girl that she's pretty. All little girls should be told that, even if she isn't.You will make her, and her mother's day.

    3. Choose your music intelligently. It should say something. When you find it, enjoy it to the fullest. I'm fifty, RAP doesn't qualify as music.

4.When you have the opportunity to do something nice for someone...DO IT!

5.When you're having problems with a girlfriend, don't drink beer.

    6. When you're having problems with everything else, drink beer.

    7. Take care of,  and enjoy your hair. You might not have it for long. Luckily I don't have to worry about this.

    8. Do not feel threatened if your girl wants a night out with the girls, encourage it. Same if your guy wants some guy time. It's healthy.

9.This is your life, it isn't an audition, there is no second chance. Live it.

    10. Take sensible risks. Go whitewater rafting, try fishing, or ask that girl out.

    11. Confidence, like a good mood, is infectious.Use it to your advantage.

    12. There is no need to ever be shy. You always have something to contribute.

    13. People who look down on you are only showing you the inside of their nostrils....ewwwwww! Pity them.

    14. Don't look down on anyone. You DON"T know it all. Only I do.

    15. You are not obligated to love, or like , your family. Sharing a dribble of DNA doesn't make them good people.

    16. If you do have a family of good people...Cherish them, there are lots who are not so lucky.

17.Don't smoke cigarettes ever. I've kicked morphine and percodan addictions (don't ask), cigarettes are the toughest.

    18. If you have to be on your feet all day, change your socks after 4 hours. Trust me, you will feel so much better.

    19. You will occasionally regret the things you do. But you will almost always regret the things you didn't do. Ya snooze ya lose...knowwhatImean?

    20. Find something of interest to collect, but don't be an idiot about it.

    21. Treat your car like you would a lovely lady.

    22. Hug your children, kiss your children, and tell your children you love them. This cannot be done too much.

    23. Their is nothing in life as fragile as a male ego.

    24. Forget trying to understand women, it can't be done. Just love them.

25.Find a job you enjoy. Life is too short, and we spend too much time working to be unhappy doing so.

    26. Read books.

    27. Read more books.

    28. Read books to your children when they are little. Do it a lot.

29.From the time they are able to understand the concept, tell your children they are going to LOVE school.

    30. Take back your empties, unless you make furniture out of them.

    31. Get out of the house when it is time for college or university. Ten years from now you won't give a damn about how much money you saved. You only fit into that window of life once.Don't waste it.

    32. Always practice safe sex. Always.

    33. Don't spend more time planning your wedding, than you do planning your marriage.

    34. When you want to get married...Have a beer and book the next flight to Guam.Pretty sure she won't look for you there.

35.Always, and I mean always...appreciate the beauty of nature.

    36. Never forget to say please and thank you. It doesn't cost you anything, but it's valuable. The same goes for "excuse me."

    37. The only way to have a friend is to be one. Recognize the difference between a friend, and someone you've just known for a long time. It is a huge difference.A friend will buy beer when it is his turn.

    38. Develope your sense of humour, I shouldn't have to even mention this.

39.Tell a woman she looks really good today. Even if you don't know her, especially if you don't know her.

    40. It does not hurt your pride, or show weakness to admit you are wrong.

    41. Getting back together after you break up is rarely, if ever, a good idea. You go forward in life , not backwards.

    42. There is no point in hating the person you once had a relationship with. Move on.

    43. Avoid a fight whenever you can , it's no big deal. But if you can't avoid it, take the prick down.

    44. THINK before you act. And especially before you react.

    45. When you feel a cold coming on...Bushmills Irish Whiskey. Not Jamesons.

46.Learn to listen. I don't mean just hear, I mean LISTEN.

    47. Dogs and children are the same in one respect. No one minds having them around if they are well behaved. Train your dog, and more importantly be a parent to your child.

    48. It is just plain foolish to think you can be your child's friend. I cringe when I hear some idiot say his ten year old is his best friend. Being his/her friend is not your role.Being a parent is. You can be friends after age 35, but even then you're still the parent.

    49. When you wake up in the morning , tell yourself you're going to have a great day today, repeat it til you believe it. NEVER underestimate the power of positive thinking.

    50. This one is very important to me..... I write a lot about drinking, I drink a lot. But I drink a lot because it helps with my pain. I have this goddamned never ending pain because of a moron who got behind the wheel after drinking and ran a stop sign tboning my car. Not every victim of a drunk driver gets killed. Though some of us wish we had been sometimes.

So number 50 is....Don't ever drink and drive. EVER.

#50 Needs to be posted everywhere, but I like each and every one of these. You are amazing.

So, how many more breakfasts of SaintVi champions do you have left?

  • Krissy_Cole

Indeed. These 50 things will make a life better! Fabulous list! I especially like the one about little girls being told they are pretty. (As a mother of two girls, it just makes me happy.)

    Party Time!

    First off, Happy Birthday!

Second off, # 50 is SO important!! That should be put on Xanga's front page!!

Third off, this entire list was awesome. When I turn 50 one day assuming I'm still blogging I will have to try to remember to write a list too! Your list & SaintVi's are very rockin. Lots of things to be learned and remembered.

Last off, thanks for putting #'s 41 & 42 in there...I needed to hear that from someone far removed...it was a smack in the face that I needed....again. Like a firm friendly reminder to stop thinking in the past.

    Take care Bricker.

  • k8tthelate

    well said.

I can't even think of anything to add to that, and Lord knows I always have to have the last wordgood job!
  • perelandra30

I agree with everyone of them but I wil add just one.  One that I feel qualified to add having grown up with six brothers and raised five sons.  Tell the men in your life that they are great everyday.  Tell them why and tell them often.  Contrary to popular belief it doesn't swell their heads it makes them able to function better.  Someday they may even believe it.

Brick you're a great guy and I hope to meet you in person one day 'cause I have a great big hug reserved just for you.

  • distractedbyzombies

This is awesome. I truly mean that. It should be printed and distributed in schools and churches and workplaces.

I have intended ever since I was approaching thirty to do a similar list. Fortunately I haven't, because (unfortunately) the things I've learned pale in comparison to the nuggets of gold you got here.

  • saintvi

I laughed, I cried, I had the urge to bake. Unfortunately, I have errands to run, so no baking today. I should look for some tins while I'm out and about, though; just to have on hand for future use.

Brick, I love you and if I wasn't already happily married, I'd snap you up and keep your cookie jar perpetually filled!

  • Blue__Summer

Excellent, excellent advice, Thom.  Thanks for sharing this.

  • seedsower

I've read them all twice, sage advice indeed. I appreciate that you took the time to do this,we can all learn from one another.
It is  important for a little girl to feel pretty,so many things will happen in her life to challenge that thought but if she believes that it was meant, that moment will help negate all the negative moments .
It will be like a treasure to her.
I know this for a fact.I have had a lot of negative moments but the moment I remember the most is the shining moment when my  teacher told me I have a beautiful smile,no matter how ugly I have ever felt, when I smile ,I feel beautiful.
